About Casco Vello de Vigo
The Casco Vello is the old core of Vigo, which slopes down from the hill to the fishing port. Until the 19th century, Vigo was a fishing village surrounded by walls, and the neighborhood preserves stone houses with balconies, narrow streets and small squares.
At the top stands the Concatedral de Santa María, a neoclassical church built between 1816 and 1834 on the site of an older Gothic church. Inside is the Cristo da Vitória, which goes out in procession in early August, the city's most attended religious festival. The Praza da Constitución, with its arcades, was the village's main square.
In the lower part, the Rúa da Pedra is known for the ostreiras, vendors who shuck oysters on the spot at stone stalls. The surrounding restaurants serve the oysters with lemon and Albariño wine at tables on the street.
The neighborhood has been restored and has bars, craft shops and taverns. Beside the port, a statue of Julio Verne recalls that Vigo appears in Vinte Mil Léguas Submarinas.
