About Parque Natural do Monte Aloia
Monte Aloia is a few kilometers north of Tui's center and was declared, in 1978, the first natural park of Galícia. It covers 746 hectares in the Galiñeiro range, with elevations ranging from about 80 to 629 meters at the alto de San Xiao.
The park has native woodlands, such as oak stands, and reforested areas from the early 20th century initiated by forestry engineer Rafael Areses, commemorated with a monument. Waymarked trails cross the mountain and pass springs, small waterfalls and granite rock formations.
At the top are the remains of a castrejo settlement from the Iron Age and an ancient wall, as well as the capela de San Xiao. The viewpoints open onto the Louro valley and the Minho down to the estuary, with Portugal on the other side.
There is an interpretation center and picnic areas. The road climbs close to the summit, allowing a short visit by car or a full day of hiking.
