About Centro histórico de Ribadeo
Ribadeo’s historic centre is a protected historic ensemble centered on Plaza de España, a large rectangular garden. The best-known side is that of the Torre dos Moreno, built in 1915 on commission from brothers Pedro and Juan Moreno Ulloa, emigrants who made their fortune in Argentina and returned to the town — the so-called indianos. The project was designed by architect Julián García Núñez.
The tower is modernist with eclectic touches, built on a concrete and iron structure, and stands out for its tiles, marbles, stained glass and red glazed ceramic roof tiles. The dome of the main tower is supported by four caryatids. The building is a Bien de Interés Cultural and is viewed from the outside.
Next to it is the pazo de Ibáñez, from the 18th century, which was the home of Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez, Marquis of Sargadelos, founder of the Sargadelos ceramics factory. Today it houses the town hall. Nearby are the convent of Santa Clara, with its church, and indiano houses with glass galleries and gardens.
The streets that descend from the plaza lead to the port on the ría. The centre can be explored on foot in a short time.
