About Ruínas de San Domingos
The ruins of San Domingos are what remains of the Gothic church of the convent of the Dominican friars, who arrived in Pontevedra at the end of the 13th century. The convent was founded around 1281, first outside the walls, and later moved to this site. In the 14th century the Dominicans began a church larger than the Franciscans', with five apses.
Today only the apse is preserved, with the five open chapels of the transept arm, with high pointed arches and no roof over the nave. The sight of the stone chapels in front of a garden is one of Pontevedra's best-known images.
At the end of the 19th century, the Sociedade Arqueológica de Pontevedra campaigned for the recovery of the ruins, which were declared a national monument. Since 1938 they have been part of the Museu de Pontevedra, as the archaeology and tombstone section.
Inside the chapels are displayed tombs of the city's historical figures, guild tombstones and stone coats of arms taken from noble houses and from the church itself.
