About Museu de Pontevedra
The Museu de Pontevedra was founded by the Provincial Deputation in 1927 and opened to the public in 1929 in the Castro Monteagudo mansion on praça da Leña. Over time it grew and today occupies five historic buildings and a sixth, modern one opened in 2012, all in the historic center, as well as the ruins of San Domingos.
The collections range from prehistory to the present day. In archaeology the castrejo and Roman goldsmithing pieces stand out, with gold jewelry found in Galicia. There are also ceramics, silverware, azeviche and a reconstruction of Admiral Méndez Núñez's cabin; he was born in the region and served on the frigate Numancia.
The painting rooms contain works of Spanish and European art from several centuries and a large collection of Galician art from the 19th and 20th centuries. The modern building, called edifício Castelao, houses the works of Alfonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao, Galician painter, writer and politician, as well as contemporary Galician artists.
A full visit takes more than one day; it's worth choosing a few buildings.
