About Ilha das Esculturas
The Ilha das Esculturas, officially ilha do Covo, is an island formed by sediments of the river Lérez, near its mouth, in Pontevedra. It covers about 70,000 square meters and is connected to both banks by footbridges and walkways. The island remained in a natural state until the late 1990s, when it became a park.
After that, 12 contemporary artists from various countries created works conceived for the island's landscape, using mainly Galician granite. Among them are the 2-meter-high stone labyrinth by American artist Robert Morris, and a 5-meter pink granite menhir at a crossroads. At the back of the island there is a floating house on the river.
The works are spread among trees, lawns and paths along the water, and the walk mixes art and nature. There are water birds on the river and carp in the channels.
The park is a common walking and running spot for residents, and the Lérez's bank has trails that follow the river upstream.
