About Basílica de Santa María a Maior
The basilica of Santa María a Maior is considered the main church of Pontevedra and is located in the old fishermen's quarter, on the edge of the historic center. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a Romanesque church, commissioned by the Grêmio de Mareantes, the association of men of the sea and the city's oldest civil institution. Construction began in the second decade of the 16th century, directed by the master Juan de Cuetos.
The building mixes late Gothic with Renaissance. The main façade, in the form of a stone altarpiece, is the highlight: it has several tiers of sculpted figures and scenes, including the Assumption of the Virgin, the apostles and saints. From the old Romanesque church few pieces remain, such as an image of Saint Peter.
The interior has three naves with ribbed vaults and side chapels. In 1962, Pope John XXIII gave the church the title of basilica. It has been a historic-artistic monument since 1931 and a Bien de Interés Cultural.
From the churchyard you can see the river Lérez and part of the town.
