About As Burgas
As Burgas are the thermal springs that gave Ourense the nickname “city of the Burgas.” The water wells up in the old town, a few minutes from the cathedral, at a temperature between 64 and 68 °C, with a flow of about 300 liters per minute. On cold days, steam rises from the springs in the middle of the street.
The waters were already used in Roman times, and remains of an ancient bath and a votive altar have been found on the site. Today's springs are set in a 19th-century stone ensemble, with spouts, and a landscaped area around them.
The water is too hot to touch with your hands at the main spouts. As Burgas are to be seen to understand the city’s thermal history, which also includes other springs and baths along the river Miño.
The place is close to the Praza Maior and the bar streets of the old town.
