About Igrexa de San Xián de Moraime
The church of San Xián de Moraime is about 3 km from Muxía, on the road approaching the village. It is what remains of an old monastery, which began as a community of hermits and appears in documents from 1095, linked to the family of the counts of Traba, one of the most powerful in medieval Galicia.
By 1105 the monastery already belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict. It was attacked by Norsemen and, around 1115, by the Almoravids, and in the 12th century the present church and a new monastery beside it were built, of which little remains.
The church is Romanesque, with three naves and three apses, and is notable for its portals: the main one has columns and carved archivolts with human and animal figures, and the side portal is also decorated. Inside there are remains of 16th-century mural paintings with religious scenes.
Around the church remains of a necropolis and of ancient buildings have been found.
