About A Ferida
A Ferida is a monumental granite sculpture installed on a small hill beside the sanctuary of the Virgem da Barca, facing the Atlantic. It is the work of artist Alberto Bañuelos-Fournier, born in Burgos, and was inaugurated on September 12, 2003.
The sculpture honors the thousands of volunteers who came to Galicia to clean the coast after the sinking of the oil tanker Prestige on November 13, 2002, which spilled oil along much of the Costa da Morte. Muxía was one of the villages most affected.
The work consists of two large granite blocks from Porriño, over 11 meters tall and about 400 tonnes in total, separated by a fissure — the wound that gives the work its name. It is one of the largest sculptures in Spain.
From the hill where the sculpture stands you can see the sanctuary, the coastal rocks, the lighthouse of the punta da Barca and the open sea. The site lies on the path between the village and the sanctuary.
