About Capela de San Roque e cruceiro
The chapel of San Roque stands at the entrance to Melide for those arriving via the Caminho Francês from Furelos. It is a small chapel, rebuilt in the 20th century using the Romanesque portal of an old church that once existed in the village.
The highlight is the cruceiro beside the chapel. The cross is Gothic, from the 14th century, and, according to the Galician painter and writer Castelao, who studied the stone cruceiros of Galícia, it is the oldest in the region. It sits on a stone base and a more recent octagonal column, joined to the cross by an iron ring.
On the front face of the cross appears Christ in Majesty, with arms open and raised, the palms of his hands facing forward. On the back face is the scene of the Crucifixion.
Stone cruceiros mark paths, crossroads and churchyards throughout Galícia. This is one of the most studied and is located on the Caminho itself.
