About Santa Eulalia de Bóveda
Santa Eulalia de Bóveda, Santalla de Bóveda in Galician, is a late-Roman sanctuary from the 3rd century in the village of Bóveda, about 14 km from Lugo.
What remains is the lower part of the building: a rectangular room covered by a barrel vault, with a small pool in the center, probably used in water rituals. The walls and the vault have mural paintings of birds, such as peacocks, leaves and geometric designs, in colors still visible.
At the entrance a small atrium with two columns precedes the façade, where a doorway opens in a horseshoe arch. It is the oldest horseshoe arch in Spanish architecture used as a structural element, a form later adopted by the Visigoths. Because of its characteristics, the building is considered unique within the territory of the former Roman Empire.
