About Praza Maior de Lugo
The praça Maior is the centre of life in Lugo, inside the wall. It is an elongated square with gardens, trees, fountains and a bandstand, surrounded by buildings with glazed galleries and arcades at ground level where cafés and shops are located.
On its most notable side stands the Casa do Concello, the town hall, one of the finest examples of Galician civil Baroque. It was built in the 18th century to a design attributed to Lucas Ferro Caaveiro, and has a wide façade with ground-floor arcades, balconies and a clock tower added later.
From the square depart the streets that lead to the cathedral and the wall. Nearby, the streets da Cruz and da Nova and the plazas do Campo and de Santo Domingo concentrate the tapas bars, where it is common to receive a small portion of food with a drink.
The square hosts festivals, concerts and fairs throughout the year, and is one of the stages for Arde Lucus in June and the San Froilán festivities in October.
