About Museo Provincial de Lugo
The Provincial Museum of Lugo was founded by the Diputación Provincial in 1932 and, since 1957, has occupied the former convent of San Francisco in the centre, renovated by the architect Manuel Gómez Román with inspiration from Galician pazos. From the convent the cloister, dating to the 15th century, and the kitchen and refectory, from the 18th century, have been preserved.
The collection covers from prehistory to contemporary art. In archaeology there are castro-period pieces, including gold jewellery, and material from Roman Lucus Augusti, with tombstones, statues and mosaics that once decorated city houses. There are also coins, medieval metalwork and sacred art.
The museum holds a large collection of Sargadelos ceramics, the Galician factory founded at the end of the 18th century, and rooms of Galician painting and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The cloister, with the stone pieces on display, and the old kitchen, with its large hearth, are among the most interesting spaces.
