About Muralla romana de Lugo
The Roman wall of Lugo surrounds the entire historic center of the city and is the only Roman wall preserved complete. It was built in the second half of the 3rd century to protect the city of Lucus Augusti, and finished at the end of the 3rd century or in the first half of the 4th century. Measurements vary, but the perimeter is between 2.1 and 2.3 km.
Originally the wall had 85 or 86 towers, of which 71 remain, most semicircular. There are today ten gates: five are Roman and five were opened between 1853 and 1921 to facilitate circulation. The walls, made of slate and granite, are several meters thick and high.
On top of the wall runs a wide pedestrian promenade, with stairways and ramps for access. The full circuit takes about 40 minutes and shows the city from above, the roofs, the cathedral towers and the neighborhoods outside the walls. The porta Miñá, the best preserved of the Roman gates, leads to the path by the river Minho.
The wall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 30 November 2000. The Wall Interpretation Center, near the cathedral, explains its construction.
