About Domus do Mitreo
The museum of the Domus do Mitreo is next to the wall, near the cathedral, in the rectorate building of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela campus in Lugo. The site belonged to the former pazo de Montenegro, purchased by the university in 1998.
During the excavations carried out before the works, the remains of a domus, a Roman house, were found; at the end of the Empire it was partly converted to house a mithraeum, a temple dedicated to the god Mitra, of eastern origin, whose cult was popular among Roman soldiers. The importance of the finds led to changing the building project to preserve them in place.
Today the museum displays the house and temple structures viewed from walkways, with remains of walls, floors and paintings. The main object is a stone altar with an inscription dedicated to Mitra by a centurion of Legio VII Gemina, the legion that was stationed in what is now León.
It is a short visit that shows what life was like inside Lucus Augusti.
