About Igrexa de Santa María das Areas
The church of Santa María das Areas is the parish church of Fisterra and stands at the foot of the monte do cabo, above Corveiro beach, on the path between the village and the lighthouse. It may have been built over an ancient castrejo settlement. Its foundation is attributed to the family of the counts of Traba, and a 1199 document mentions the church of Santa María of the end of the earth.
The first phase of construction dates to the 12th century, in Romanesque style, and from that period remain the central nave and parts of the old portico. In the 14th and 15th centuries Gothic elements were added, such as the Chapel of the Carmo, the high altar and the baptistery, with ribbed vaults.
Inside is the image of the Santo Cristo de Fisterra, much venerated on the Costa da Morte, which according to tradition arrived by sea.
The church and the monte, with the hermitage of San Guillerme, form a historic ensemble protected since 1985.
