About Praia de Doniños
Doniños beach is the best-known beach of Ferrol, in the parish of the same name, about 8 km from the center. It is a beach open to the Atlantic Ocean, with almost 2 km of sand, and is popular with surfers and bodyboarders because of its strong waves.
Behind the sand there is a dune area and, just beyond, the Doniños lagoon, a freshwater body surrounded by vegetation that attracts birds. Around it, a pinewood and the castro of Lobadiz complete the landscape. There are also ruins of an 18th-century coastal artillery battery, part of Ferrol's defenses.
The beach has a promenade, a recreation area, beach bars and lifeguard service in the summer season. The ends of the beach have currents and are more closely monitored; swim only in areas indicated by the lifeguards.
The water is cold even in summer, and the wind is often strong. The beach season generally runs from June to September.
