About Exponav
Exponav, Exposição Nacional da Construção Naval, is the main Spanish museum dedicated to the history of shipbuilding. It opened on March 10, 2008, within the arsenal area of Ferrol, in a restored former workshop building, at the initiative of the Spanish Navy and the association of naval engineers.
The arsenal of Ferrol was built from the mid-18th century, in the time of Ferdinand VI and the Marquis of la Ensenada, to be the great naval base and shipyard of northern Spain, with a dock able to receive dozens of ships of the line, dry docks, warehouses and workshops. Ferrol continues to be a Navy base.
The exhibition follows the evolution of shipbuilding, from wooden sailing craft to steel ships and submarines, with models, tools, original parts, plans and audiovisuals. An important section tells the history of the Ferrol shipyards themselves and of the people who worked there.
The museum also has a specialized archive and library.
