About Concatedral de San Xiao

The concatedral de San Xiao, or San Julián, stands in the middle of the bairro da Madalena. It was built in the 18th century as the parish church of the new town, designed by the naval engineer Julián Sánchez Bort, who also worked on the arsenal's works.

It is a neoclassical building of sober lines, with a Greek-cross plan and a large central dome over the crossing. The granite façade has columns and a classical pediment. The interior is spacious and bright, with few ornaments, in keeping with the taste of the time.

The church houses images linked to the Semana Santa de Ferrol, one of the oldest and best-known in Spain, with processions that go through the bairro's streets. Since the end of the 20th century it has been co-cathedral of the diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, alongside the cathedral of Mondoñedo.
