About Museo das Mariñas

The Museu das Mariñas is dedicated to the history and traditional life of the comarca das Mariñas, the region around Betanzos and the A Coruña coast. It is housed in the former convent of Santo Domingo, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, next to the town's main square. It opened in 1983 and was reopened in 1993 after a restoration.

The collections display archaeological items, from castros to the Middle Ages, sculpture and religious art, and a large ethnography section with traditional costumes, domestic objects, farming and fishing tools, and mementos of emigration to the Americas. There are also pieces related to the history of Betanzos, such as coats of arms and municipal documents.

The same building houses the municipal archive and library, and a cultural magazine about the region's history is published there.

It is a short visit, good for understanding the town before touring the churches.
