About Igrexa de Santa María do Azougue
The church of Santa María do Azougue stands next to the church of San Francisco, in the upper part of Betanzos’s historic center. The name comes from the azougue, the town’s old fair or market, whose square was nearby. The church was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style, with the support of the merchants and guilds of Betanzos.
It has three naves separated by pointed arches and a chancel with three chapels. The main façade has a portal of successive arches with sculptures and a rose window above. The tower was added later.
Inside the church is a Gothic wooden altarpiece depicting religious scenes, and medieval statues.
The three Gothic churches of Betanzos are just a few steps from one another and form a rare ensemble in Galicia.
