About Réplica da Caravela Pinta

On 1 March 1493 the caravel Pinta, commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón, entered Baiona’s bay on the return from Columbus’s first voyage. For this reason the village was the first place in Europe to learn of the arrival to lands on the other side of the Atlantic, a few days before Columbus reached Lisbon and Palos.

The Pinta was one of the expedition’s three vessels, alongside the Niña and the nao Santa María. It was a caravel with square sails, fast, hired from its owners, who also sailed on board.

The full-size replica is moored in Baiona harbour. The visit goes over the deck and inside, with figures and objects that show life on board, the cargo and the navigation instruments of the time. The small size of the ship surprises those who imagine the ocean crossing.

The arrival of the Pinta is remembered every year in the Festa da Arribada, on the first weekend of March, with a medieval fair in the streets of the centre.
