About Igrexa de Santiago de Arzúa
The igreja of Santiago is Arzúa's parish church and is located in the center of the village, on the street the Camino de Santiago passes through. Because it is dedicated to the apostle, it is one of the obligatory stops for pilgrims crossing the village, many of them two days from the cathedral.
The current building is modern, made of granite, built on the site of an older church. Inside, the altars hold images of the apostle in the two most common representations in Galicia: Santiago the pilgrim, with hat, staff and scallop, and Santiago the knight, on horseback, a figure linked to the legends of the Reconquest.
The church is close to the main square and the capela da Madalena, and the complex marks the center of the village, with bars, cheese shops and hostels around. Pilgrims usually stamp their credential at the church or in the hostels.
The church remains open for worship, with Masses for pilgrims at certain times.
