About Monte de Santa Trega

The mount of Santa Trega, or Santa Tecla in Spanish, is 341 meters high and occupies the extreme southwest of Galicia. From the top you can see the mouth of the Minho river, the island of Ínsua already in Portuguese waters, the village of Caminha and the hills of Portugal, the Galician coast to the north and the Atlantic Ocean. On clear days the view reaches far along the coast.

On the summit is the stone chapel of Santa Trega, where the Festa do Monte is held in August, the village's most important festival. Next to the chapel door there is a plaque with the marks used by the fishermen of Póvoa de Varzim in Portugal to identify families, placed as a tribute in 1979.

Near the chapel is the archaeological museum of Santa Trega, with pieces found in the excavations of the castro: pottery, coins, jewelry, tools and carved stones. Around it there are viewpoints, a Stations of the Cross path with stone crosses and the road that descends the slopes of the castro.

The drive up is by a narrow, winding road, and vehicle access may be subject to a fee.
