About Monte de San Pedro
Monte de San Pedro lies west of A Coruña's center, above the sea, and is the highest point on the city's coast. For decades it was a military area, with a coastal artillery battery installed in the 20th century to defend the harbor entrance. The area was transformed into a park and opened to the public.
The large guns of the old battery remain on the summit, alongside concrete structures, and have become part of the landscape. Around them, the park has lawns, gardens, a hedge maze, a lake and viewpoints from which you can see the whole peninsula of A Coruña, the Torre de Hércules, the port and the coast stretching far away on clear days.
At the top is also the Cúpula Atlántica, a space with a camera obscura that projects images of the surrounding landscape. To get up there, besides the road, there is a panoramic elevator — a spherical glass cabin that climbs the slope from the promenade.
Late afternoon is the most popular time, to watch the sunset over the Atlantic.
