About Puente de Piedra

The Puente de Piedra, the stone bridge, crosses the Duero between the old town and the neighborhood on the other side. It was completed at the beginning of the 13th century and for centuries was the city's only river crossing. People, goods and the transhumant herds that followed the Via de la Plata passed over it.

The bridge has several stone arches, with cutwaters (tajamares) to resist the current. It once had towers and other elements that were removed during early 20th-century renovations, but it retained its medieval form and is one of Zamora's symbols.

The highlight of the bridge is the view: from its middle you can see the city on the rock, with the cathedral and its dome (cimborrio), and the aceñas on the river. On the other side, the bank has pedestrian paths along the water.

Pilgrims on the Via de la Plata cross the bridge when they arrive in Zamora, coming from Salamanca.
