About Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena
The church of Santa María Magdalena is located on the rúa de los Francos, the medieval street that links the Plaza Mayor to the cathedral. It was built between the 12th and 13th centuries in two phases: the first influenced by Romanesque style and the second with Gothic elements. In the Middle Ages it served as a hospital of the Order of St. John.
It is one of the few churches in Zamora with a single, tall, rectangular nave. The best-known feature is the south portal facing the street, with arches decorated with vegetal motifs and figures, among the most elaborately worked of the city's Romanesque.
Inside, a medieval tomb with a canopy stands out, decorated with figures and animals, leaning against one of the nave walls.
The church lies on the route between the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, and can be visited on the same walk that leads to San Pedro y San Ildefonso and the castle.
