About Iglesia de San Pedro y San Ildefonso
The church of San Pedro y San Ildefonso is the largest and most important church in Zamora after the cathedral. Of Romanesque origin, it was transformed over the centuries: the nave was given Gothic vaults, and the main façade gained elements from later periods. In 1500 it received the title of archpriestal church.
The church houses the relics of Saint Ildefonso, archbishop of Toledo, and Saint Atilano, patron of Zamora. The relics are kept in urns in the main chapel, a focus of devotion in the city.
The exterior, facing a small square, still shows the Romanesque apse and arched windows. The church lies midway between the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, near the Magdalena.
It is a good stop to understand how Zamora's churches mix Romanesque fabric with Gothic and later reforms.
