About Castillo de Zamora
Zamora Castle stands at the western tip of the plateau where the city was born, next to the cathedral. It is a fortress of Romanesque origin, with a diamond-shaped plan, that formed part of the walls that gave Zamora the nickname "la bien cercada" (the well-fenced).
After extensive restoration work, the castle opened for visits with the walls, the moat and the battlements consolidated. From the top of the walls you can see the Duero, the stone bridge, the aceñas and the plain surrounding the city.
Inside the enclosure is the Baltasar Lobo space, Castillo Centro de Arte, with sculptures by the Zamoran artist who lived in Paris and worked with smooth forms in stone and bronze. The gardens around the castle display other of his works outdoors.
Near the castle begins the best-known stretch of the walls, which descends to the river, with gates and posterns linked to the city's medieval history, such as the Portillo de la Traición.
