About Templo de Diana
The so-called Templo de Diana stands in the heart of Mérida, surrounded by streets and modern buildings. It was built at the end of the 1st century BC or the beginning of the 1st century AD, in the municipal forum of Augusta Emerita. Despite its name, derived from an old assumption, archaeologists believe it was dedicated to the imperial cult.
The temple sits on a high podium and was surrounded by Corinthian granite columns, several of which remain standing, with capitals and part of the pediment. Around it, a reflecting pool reproduces the tank that surrounded the temple in Roman times.
The temple survived because in the 16th century the Corbos family built a Renaissance palace inside it, using the columns as walls. Part of that palace was preserved and can be seen fitted among the Roman columns.
A few steps away are the portico of the forum, with statues and medallions, and the arco de Trajano, a granite arch about 15 metres high that marked the entrance to a sacred enclosure.
