About Trujillo

Trujillo stands on a granite hill about 47 km east of Cáceres, on the road to Madrid. It is the city of Francisco Pizarro, who conquered the Inca Empire, and of Francisco de Orellana, the first European to descend the Amazon River. The wealth brought from the Americas paid for the palaces that surround the Plaza Mayor.

The Plaza Mayor, irregular and terraced, is the centre of the town, surrounded by palaces. In the centre stands Pizarro's bronze equestrian statue, and around it the Palacio de la Conquista, built by Hernando Pizarro, with busts of Francisco Pizarro and of his Inca wife at the corners, the church of San Martín and other palaces with coats of arms.

At the top of the hill is the castle, of Arab origin, from the 9th–10th centuries, with walls, cisterns and wide views over the plain and the holm oaks. On the route between the square and the castle, the upper part of the town, the Villa, has the church of Santa María la Mayor, Romanesque and Gothic, with a tower open for climbing.

In May, Trujillo usually holds the Feria Nacional del Queso.
