About Plaza Mayor e Torre de Bujaco
The Plaza Mayor of Cáceres lies outside the wall, at the foot of the old town, and is the center of the city's social life. It's a large, sloping square, with arcades on one side housing bars, restaurants and the tourist office, and the wall on the other, with the towers and gates providing access to the Ciudad Monumental.
The Torre de Bujaco, about 25 meters high, is an Almohad 12th-century tower with a rectangular base, built of rammed earth and reinforced with stone. The name would come from the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub, who took the city in 1173. Inside, a small display tells the city's history, and from the top you can see the square and the roofs of the old town. Beside it is the Ermita de la Paz, a small Baroque chapel set into the wall.
The Arco de la Estrella, built in the 18th century by Manuel de Lara Churriguera, is the main entrance to the old town: a wide, sloping arch designed so carriages could make the turn. At the top is the image of the Virgen de la Estrella.
The square is the place for festivals, concerts and the Holy Week processions.
