About Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo
The Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo is one of the best-known palaces of the Ciudad Monumental, on the square of the same name, beside the concatedral. It was built at the end of the 15th century by the Golfín family, traditionally said to be of French origin, who had another palace in the upper part of the city, the one called Arriba.
The façade blends Gothic and Plateresque styles, with a large entrance arch, paired windows and a decorative band with the family coat of arms, the fleurs-de-lis, and carved figures. The tower was cut by order of Queen Isabella, like those of other nobles in the city. The Catholic Monarchs stayed in the palace when they passed through Cáceres.
The interior is visited in guided groups and displays halls with furniture, tapestries, armor, documents and portraits, telling the family's history across five centuries, up to the 20th century. One of the rooms houses documents related to the history of modern Spain.
The palace is one of the few noble houses in Cáceres open to interior visits.
