About Museo de Cáceres

The Museo de Cáceres occupies the Casa de las Veletas and the neighbouring Casa de los Caballos, in the upper part of the Ciudad Monumental. The Casa de las Veletas, from the 15th century and renovated in the 18th century, was built over the former Almohad alcázar, and its name comes from the weather vanes that topped the roof.

The highlight is the aljibe, the Arab cistern from the 12th century that lay beneath the alcázar. It is an underground chamber with five naves, with horseshoe arches supported by columns, where rainwater was collected. Water still accumulates at the bottom and reflects the arches.

The archaeology rooms display pieces from prehistory, Bronze Age warrior stelae, Roman and Visigothic objects. The ethnography section deals with traditional trades and clothing of Extremadura. In the Casa de los Caballos is the fine arts section, with works by El Greco, Picasso, Miró and Spanish artists of the 20th century.

The museum has a small inner garden.
