About Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró
Joan Miró, son of a Mallorcan mother, moved to Palma in 1956 and lived there until his death in 1983. The Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, established by him and his wife Pilar Juncosa, occupies the Cala Major property about 4 km from the center, where the painter’s house and studios are located.
The Taller Sert is the large studio the architect Josep Lluís Sert, a friend of Miró, designed for him in 1956, featuring a wavy roof and natural light. Inside, brushes, paints, unfinished canvases and the objects that inspired the artist have been left as they were. Son Boter, an 18th-century country house acquired later, has walls covered with charcoal drawings Miró made for sculptures.
The Estel building, by Rafael Moneo, opened in 1992 and houses the foundation’s collection, with thousands of works, drawings and sketches shown in rotating exhibitions.
The gardens contain sculptures and offer views of the bay.
