About Basílica de Sant Francesc

The Basilica of Sant Francesc began to be built in 1281, together with the Franciscan convent, in Palma’s old quarter. The church is Gothic, but the main façade was redone at the end of the 17th century in a Baroque style, with a large sculpted portal showing the Virgin and Franciscan saints, below a rose window.

Inside, the single nave has side chapels and a Baroque high altar. In a chapel behind the altar is the tomb of Ramon Llull, a 13th-century Majorcan philosopher, mystic, and writer, one of the first authors to write in Catalan, who preached and traveled around the Mediterranean.

The Gothic cloister, from the 14th and 15th centuries, is one of the most peaceful places in Palma, with slender arches atop columns of varied designs, orange trees, and a well in the middle. In front of the church, on the square, stands the statue of Friar Junípero Serra, born in Mallorca, who founded missions in California.

Visits often have reduced hours because of religious life.
