About Museu d'Art de Girona

The Museu d'Art de Girona was founded in 1976 and occupies the Palau Episcopal, the former residence of the bishops, next to the cathedral. The building contains parts from several periods, and some rooms retain their original function, such as the former episcopal prison.

The collection is the most important in the diocese and the province of Girona, and the route is chronological: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Realism, Modernisme and Noucentisme. The medieval collections are the museum's strong point.

Among the standout pieces are the portable altar of Sant Pere de Rodes, from the 10th century, the retable of Sant Pere de Púbol, from the 15th century, painted by Bernat Martorell, panels from the altarpiece of Sant Feliu de Girona, from the 16th century, and the sculpture Contra l'invasor, from the 19th century. There are also rooms with ceramics, glass and liturgical art.

The museum also manages the pharmacy of the old Hospital de Santa Caterina, in the Mercadal, one of the best preserved in Europe.
