About Monestir de Sant Pere de Galligants

The Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants already existed in the first half of the 10th century, outside the walls, next to the Galligants stream. The present church is Romanesque, dating from around 1130, and the cloister has carved capitals that resemble those of the cathedral cloister.

The monks left the monastery in 1836, with the confiscation of Church property known as Mendizábal's disentailment. In 1857 the provincial museum of antiquities was installed there, and the building has been a museum ever since.

Since 1992 it has been one of the seats of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya. The exhibition occupies the church, the cloister and a floor built above the cloister in the 19th century, with objects found in excavations in the province of Girona, many coming from the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries.

The route runs from prehistory to the Middle Ages and displays pottery, sculptures, mosaics and tombstones. The building itself is one of the best examples of Catalan Romanesque in the city.
