About Basílica de Sant Feliu

The Basílica de Sant Feliu, dedicated to a martyr from the early centuries of Christianity, appears in documents from 882. It was Girona's main temple before the cathedral was built, and even today the parish that operates there is called Parròquia Major.

Construction extended from the 12th to the 17th century. Much of the Romanesque phase remains; the naves and roofs are Gothic, work started in 1313, and the façade is Baroque from the 18th century. The Gothic tower, with a stone spire, is one of the few in Spain with a true spire and shape, and together with the cathedral forms the city's best-known skyline.

In the presbytery, eight Roman and paleochristian sarcophagi from the 3rd and 4th centuries are set into the walls. Tradition says they were found on the site itself, which would have been an ancient necropolis.

The chapel of Sant Narcís holds the saint's Gothic tomb, carved in alabaster by Joan de Tournai between 1326 and 1328. The church also houses the tomb of General Mariano Álvarez de Castro, who commanded the defence of Girona in the siege of 1809.
