About Castell Gala Dalí

The castle of Púbol appears in documents from 1065 and was the seat of a medieval barony. The current building, around a narrow, tall central courtyard, dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries. It is located in the village of Púbol, municipality of La Pera, in the Baix Empordà, about 40 km from Figueres.

In 1969 Dalí promised Gala a castle and ended up buying the one in Púbol, then in poor condition. He oversaw the restoration and did all the interior decoration, so the entire castle became a work given to her as a gift. Gala imposed one condition: Dalí could only enter with a written invitation.

Gala spent seasons there in the 1970s and was buried in the crypt in 1982. Dalí moved into the castle after her death and stayed there until 1984, when a fire injured him and he moved to the Torre Galatea in Figueres. The castle opened to the public as a museum in 1996.

The route goes through the Hall of Shields, the Piano Room, Gala's bedroom and bathroom, the library and the crypt. In the garden there are sculptures of long-legged elephants and the pool with busts of Richard Wagner. In the garage is the couple's black Cadillac, and there is a collection of Gala's haute-couture dresses.
