About Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí

In 1929 Dalí bought a fishermen's hut in Portlligat, a small cove neighboring Cadaqués, about 40 km from Figueres. Over four decades he and Gala bought the neighboring huts and connected them together. It was the artist's only permanent residence, where he lived until Gala's death in 1982. After that, he never returned.

The house has a labyrinthine structure: narrow corridors, level changes and windows of varied shapes that frame the bay. The route begins at the Recibidor del Oso, featuring a stuffed bear given by Edward James. It continues through the studio, which still holds easels and brushes, the models' room and the dressing room lined with photographs of the couple.

The Sala Oval, built in 1961, was Gala's space. Outside are the patio, the small summer dining room and the 1967 pool, decorated with a lips-shaped sofa, swan-shaped fountains and Pirelli tire posters. The house has been designated a site of cultural interest since 1997.

Cadaqués is 2 km from the house and is the arrival point for buses. Many visitors combine the visit with a walk through the village by the bay before or after their reserved time in Portlligat.
