About Yahuarcocha Lagoon

The Yahuarcocha lagoon lies north of Ibarra at about 2,210 meters altitude, in a valley surrounded by hills. It covers roughly 240 hectares and reaches up to 7 meters deep.

The name comes from Kichwa and means lake of blood. Chronicles and historical research report that a bloody battle took place there between northern highland peoples, such as the Caranqui, and the Incas advancing into the region; according to tradition, the blood stained the water. The National Institute of Cultural Heritage recognizes it as a sacred lagoon.

On the shore is Ibarra’s racetrack, and the lagoon is used for boat rides, water sports, cycling and walking. It is also habitat for resident and migratory water birds.

On weekends, local families go to the shore to stroll and eat. During the week the place is quieter.
