About Cayambe Volcano

The Cayambe volcano, at 5,790 meters, is the third highest in Ecuador and dominates the landscape east of the town that bears its name. The Equator line crosses its slopes, making it the only point on the equatorial line covered in snow.

The volcano lies within Cayambe-Coca National Park, which protects páramos, lagoons and Andean forests and is home to wildlife such as the spectacled bear.

A dirt road climbs the slopes to the mountain refuge area, from where summit climbs depart. The climb requires experience, ice equipment and a guide; for the average visitor, the drive up to the refuge area already brings you close to the glaciers.

From the town and from the Quitsato sundial, the volcano is visible on clear days, especially in the morning.
