The city
Settlement in the upper Elqui Valley, at about 1,250 meters altitude, in the commune of Paihuano. It was called La Greda and later La Unión, and received its current name in 1936 in homage to the region’s spirit. Around the plaza are the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, with a tall wooden tower, artisan stalls and distilleries. Four kilometers away is Montegrande, where Gabriela Mistral spent her childhood and is buried. It is the land of Pisco, which Chile’s official tourism credits as originating here.
