About Valle de la Concepción

Valle de la Concepción is in the municipality of Uriondo, about 25 km south of Tarija, at roughly 1,700 meters elevation. The village of Concepción is the municipal seat, and the valley concentrates much of the department’s vineyards and wineries, between about 1,600 and 2,000 meters elevation.

The wineries produce high-altitude wines and singani, the Bolivian denominación de origen grape spirit. Many receive visitors to see the vineyards, the production process, and for tastings. There are larger establishments as well as artisanal producers of vino patero.

Uriondo hosts the Vendimia Chapaca, declared Bolivia’s intangible cultural heritage by Law 1388 of 2021. The festival brings together the grape harvest and stomping, parades, music, fairs of artisanal wine, singani and grape chicha, and a route of lagares, wineries and distilleries.

The municipality also promotes an art-and-wine route, with murals and sculptures spread through the village. In the community of Rujero, in the same municipality, fossils of the valley’s megafauna appear.
