Get to know Queensland

Queensland occupies the northeast of Australia, from Brisbane's subtropics to the humid heat of Cape York. Along the coast, for more than 2,000 kilometers, stretches the Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The state does not change clocks for daylight saving.

Brisbane, the capital, sits on the river, with South Bank park and the Lone Pine koala sanctuary; Moreton Island is reached by boat. To the south, the Gold Coast has surfing beaches and the high-rises of Surfers Paradise and the theme parks: Dreamworld, WhiteWater World, Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World and Wet'n'Wild. Inland, Tamborine Mountain and Lamington and Springbrook parks are part of the Gondwana Rainforests, a UNESCO site.

North of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast includes Noosa Heads, with its seaside national park, Maroochydore and the beaches of Mooloolaba, and Beerwah, home to Australia Zoo and the Glass House Mountains. Further up, K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world, a UNESCO site, with freshwater lakes; it is reached from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach, and Hervey Bay is known for humpback whales.

In the mid-coast, the Whitsundays are an archipelago of 74 islands, with Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet lookout; Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island are the bases. In the tropical north, Cairns is the town for boat trips and diving on the Great Barrier Reef; Port Douglas lies to the north, Kuranda is the mountain village with its train and cableway, and Cape Tribulation is where the Daintree rainforest, in the UNESCO Wet Tropics, meets the sea.

On the table, seafood like the Moreton Bay bug and tropical fruits like mango define the state's cuisine.

When to go

The seasons are the same as in Brazil. In the tropical north (Cairns, Port Douglas, Whitsundays), the best time is the dry season, from May to October, when the sea is clearer for diving. From November to April it rains more and is cyclone season; from November to May is also the tropical jellyfish season, and swimming is done in enclosed areas and with lycra suits. Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast have beaches year-round, with mild winters.

Getting there

Brisbane (BNE) and the Gold Coast (OOL) receive international and domestic flights, and Cairns (CNS) also has international services. Connections from Brazil require at least one stop, usually in Santiago, Chile or another city. Confirm before booking. Distances are large: Brisbane is about 1,700 km from Cairns, and the most practical way between north and south is by plane. There are airports on the Sunshine Coast, in Hervey Bay, in Proserpine (near Airlie Beach), and on Hamilton Island. The Gold Coast is about 80 km from Brisbane, served by train and road.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Queensland

What is the best time to dive on the Great Barrier Reef?

From May to October the sea is usually clearer and calmer, and there are fewer tropical jellyfish. Tours depart from Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays year-round, and boats provide lycra suits for swimming during the jellyfish season, from November to May.

How many days for the Gold Coast theme parks?

Each park usually requires a full day. Dreamworld and WhiteWater World are next to each other in Coomera, while Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet'n'Wild are in Oxenford; Sea World is on the waterfront. Many families allow 3 to 5 days for parks and the beach.

How to visit K'gari?

The island has only sand tracks, so visits are made by 4x4 vehicle or on organized tours. Ferries depart from near Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. A day trip visits Lake McKenzie and 75 Mile Beach; with more time you can stay overnight on the island.

When to see whales in Hervey Bay?

Humpback whales typically rest in Hervey Bay from July to October on their southbound migration. Whale-watching boats depart from the town marina.

Does Queensland observe daylight saving time?

No. Queensland is 13 hours ahead of Brasília year-round. From October to April, when New South Wales and Victoria advance their clocks, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are 1 hour behind Sydney and Melbourne.

How to get from Cairns to the Daintree rainforest?

By car, follow the coast to Port Douglas and then cross the Daintree River by ferry to Cape Tribulation. There are also day trips from Cairns and from Port Douglas.
