About Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish
The parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the main church of Famaillá and stands in front of the main square, in the city center. Devotion to the Virgin of Mount Carmel is among the oldest in the area, and the church is the center of the community’s religious life.
The temple houses the patroness’s image, a dressed wooden statue from the 18th century. According to popular tradition, it was brought to Famaillá by a Carmelite monk more than 175 years ago. The image received a canonical coronation, reserved for old images of artistic value with historical documentation.
Every July 16 Famaillá celebrates the patroness. The image goes out in procession through the streets and at night there is a celebration in the square, with music and a fair. The festival draws people from across the province, and tributes are repeated on the 16th of each month.
In the square in front, a monolith commemorates General Lavalle’s passage through Famaillá in 1841, before the battle fought nearby.
