About Klosterkirche Salzwedel

The Mönchskirche, the monks' church, was built around 1250 as the church of the Franciscan convent of Salzwedel. The convent appears in documents from 1261. With the Reformation it passed to the town; the last Franciscan living there died in 1552, and the church was adapted for Protestant worship between 1575 and 1581.

The convent building, north of the church, served as a Latin school after the Reformation and, since 1895, houses the town hall. Church and town hall thus form a single brick ensemble in the old town.

In the 20th century the church was even used as a storage facility. Between 1984 and 1986 it was converted into a concert hall, and today hosts concerts and exhibitions that draw audiences from the whole region. The organ was re‑dedicated in 2009. The Retable of the Vineyard, from Cranach's workshop, which had been here since 1582, is now in the Danneil museum.
