About Danneil Museum (Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum)

The Danneil Museum is housed in the former Propstei, south of the church of Santa Maria. The house was built in 1578 by Albrecht von der Schulenburg, incorporating parts of a 1474 residence, and is a Renaissance half-timbered building with a stair tower. The sandstone portal dates from 1754.

The collection began in 1836 in an Altmark history association in which Johann Friedrich Danneil played a central role, and after whom the museum is named. It was one of Germany’s first association museums and has occupied the Propstei since the early 1930s.

Prehistory and ancient history of the Altmark form the core of the holdings, with tens of thousands of finds. Among the art objects are the Salzwedel Madonna, an oak sculpture from the early 13th century, and the Retable of the Vineyard (Weinbergaltar), from 1582, made in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger. The central panel shows the parable of the vineyard workers as an allegory of the Reformation. The retable stood in the Mönchskirche and was moved to the museum after restoration.

The museum also has rooms on the history of the town and region from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, and hosts temporary exhibitions.
